for those of you who play more dub or more minimal music (whether that's dub techno, minimal techno, trip hop, whatever) that lends itself well to effects, PMA has a good basic set and you can't beat it for price - however, if you want to explore a bit further I just wanted to recommend you take a look at these two gadgets:

both the KORG Mini Kaoss Pad 2 and Kaossilator 2 fit in the palm of your hand, run off batteries and actually look a bit (a bit!) like the PMD.
if you just want FX and sound processing, you are looking at the Mini Kaoss Pad 2. The Kaossilator will serve as a sampler/sequencer.
I think both can be purchased for around $150 US. because they are so tiny and run off batteries, they are the perfect fit for PMA.
if you wanted something larger and more full featured, for $300 US I'd go with the QUAD PAD no doubt:
